William Penn stepped ashore in America here in 1682, the colonial courts of Delaware sat in the courthouse on the green, and the spire of that courthouse is still the center of the twelve-mile circle that draws the curved northern border of the state, the only border like it in the country. Walk Delaware Street to the river today and you pass three centuries of brick without a single false note, down to Battery Park and the long view across the water.
