Abingdon, VA Shirts

Abingdon got through the Depression on vegetables. In 1933 an actor named Robert Porterfield came home to southwest Virginia with a troupe of out-of-work performers and opened a theater where the forty-cent admission could be paid in produce, dairy, or livestock, and most nights it was. Playwrights sometimes took their royalties in Virginia hams. That theater is still staging shows, which tells you how this town treats a good idea. The other good idea is the Virginia Creeper Trail, thirty-four miles of old railbed that begins here and climbs into the mountains, filling the town on warm weekends with bikes and the happily exhausted people who ride them. Our Abingdon design lets the two share a shirt: a bicycle coasting out of green hills toward town, with a small tomato tucked into the composition for the theater crowd, who will recognize it.
