Luray keeps its music in two places, one above the town and one beneath it. Below are the caverns, discovered in 1878, where a Pentagon mathematician later spent three years tuning stalactites until the cave itself could be played, its notes rung from formations spread across acres of stone. Above is the singing tower at the edge of town, raised in 1937, whose 47 bells still ring scheduled recitals over the rooftops. Between the two sits Luray proper, a Shenandoah Valley main street with ridgelines in every direction and the national park close enough that mountain overlooks feel like a municipal amenity.
