There are 217 steps inside Old Barney, and every one of them is worth it. Barnegat Lighthouse was first lit in 1859, engineered by George Meade a few years before he commanded the Union army at Gettysburg, and its red-topped tower has anchored the north end of Long Beach Island ever since, guarding an inlet that sailors once ranked among the most dangerous on the coast. The village beneath it stays honest: a working commercial fishing fleet still lands scallops and tilefish at the docks, and the long granite jetty draws surfcasters at dawn no matter the season. This is the quiet end of the island, where the entertainment is a lighthouse, a rock wall, and whatever the boats brought in. Our Barnegat Light design stacks the icons the way the town does: the red and white tower rising tall, the jetty running out into the inlet at its feet, a gull or two on patrol. Climb it once and you will understand the shirt. Barnegat Light businesses come onto this page as they join ShirtMap.
