Frenchtown owes its name to a Swiss. Paul Henri Mallet-Prevost fled the French Revolution and bought nearly a thousand acres along the Delaware in 1794, and because he and his circle spoke French, the neighbors started calling the settlement Frenchtown. The name became official decades later, and the town has been comfortable with mild inaccuracy ever since. Today Frenchtown moves at the speed of a bicycle, literally: the canal towpath along the river ends its long run here, and riders roll off the gravel and straight onto Bridge Street for coffee, a browse, and a look at the water. The steel bridge to Pennsylvania hums quietly, the river slides by, and nobody is in a hurry, which is the local specialty.
