Every May in Ocean Grove, 114 canvas tents go up in tidy rows, as they have in one form or another since Methodist ministers founded a camp meeting by the sea here in 1869. Families summer in them still, tent in front, tiny cabin behind, geraniums on the tent porch, and the waiting list runs long. At the center of it all stands the Great Auditorium, a vast wooden hall raised in 1894 in a matter of months, where hymns, concerts, and organ music have poured out over the town for more than 130 years. Around the edges, blocks of Victorian cottages compete politely over porch trim. People call the town God's square mile, and whatever you believe, the square mile part is verifiably charming.
