No incorporated town in West Virginia sits higher than Davis, and everything about the place follows from that fact. Winter arrives early and stays late. Red spruce crowds the plateau. Just outside town, the Blackwater River drops over a ledge in a cascade of nearly sixty feet, stained amber by spruce and hemlock tannins, a waterfall the color of strong tea, photographed in every season and never quite believed.

When the snow settles in, the nearby state park runs a quarter-mile sled run that locals claim, credibly, is the longest on the East Coast. Davis itself is a hardy grid of a former timber town, now home to skiers, mountain bikers, and people who came up for a weekend twenty years ago and never managed to leave.
