Age is Shepherdstown's opening line: chartered in 1762, it is the oldest town in West Virginia, a title it technically shares with one distant rival and locally shares with no one. It sits above the Potomac at an ancient river ford, and its few blocks still glow with lamplight in the evening, brick sidewalks, leaning storefronts, the occasional ghost story told with a perfectly straight face. History likes it here: James Rumsey demonstrated a working steamboat on the river below town in 1787, twenty years before steam power made anyone else famous.
