Wickford was laid out as a seaport in 1709, modeled on colonial Boston, and then, in the best possible way, not much happened to it. The result is one of the largest collections of eighteenth-century homes in the Northeast, tidy clapboard houses crowding narrow lanes around a snug, well-protected harbor. Shipbuilders and West Indies traders paid for those houses; weekend sailors keep them company now. Boats swing at moorings a few steps from front doors, and the coves around the village still give up quahogs, the hard-shell clams Rhode Islanders treat as a food group. Wickford does not perform its history; it simply lives at the address.
