In May of 1774, so the story goes, a brigantine loaded with tea anchored in the Chester River, and Chestertown's patriots rowed out in broad daylight and pitched the cargo overboard. No newspaper of the day recorded it, and historians have argued about it ever since, which has not stopped the town from re-enacting the whole affair every spring with visible relish. What is certain: Chestertown was a genuine power in the 1700s, a busy port of entry on the Chester River, and the wealth of that era still stands in rows of Georgian brick along streets that slope gently down to the water. A tall ship ties up at the foot of town, and the college keeps the sidewalks young.
