Solomons occupies the last curl of land where the Patuxent River opens into the Chesapeake, an island joined to the mainland by a short bridge and organized entirely around the water. Crab boats head out early. Sailboats fill the creek by noon. Toward evening the dock bars take over, and half the county seems to arrive by boat for steamed crabs and a sunset that performs nightly over the river mouth. The town's most photographed resident is a lighthouse: a screwpile cottage, a little six-sided house perched on iron legs, one of only a few of its kind left on the bay, long retired from duty and preserved right in town. It looks less like infrastructure than like a cottage that waded out too far and decided to stay.
