Bethel is western Maine doing everything at once: a white-steepled common in the valley, the Androscoggin looping past in wide oxbows, and ski mountains standing just north of town with their trails showing like chalk lines all winter. The town fills with skiers from December to April, then hands itself over to paddlers, hikers, and foliage drives without missing a step. Under it all is a proper old New England village, settled on the river in 1774, with an academy on the hill and a town that has hosted everything from farmers markets to a world-record snowman.
