There is no off season in Rangeley. Summer belongs to the chain of lakes strung west toward the New Hampshire line, big waters with names like Mooselookmeguntic, where loons call across the coves long after the camps go dark. Fall sends everyone up the high road south of town for the overlook. Winter hands the map to snowmobilers, who ride well over a hundred miles of groomed trail radiating out from the village. And spring means fly fishing, the thing that made Rangeley famous in the first place, back when sports rode trains north for the brook trout.
