About Chester
At the north end of Chester, along North Street, stands a row of houses built of stone that glitters. Two Scottish stonemason brothers began the work in the 1830s, laying local gneiss and mica schist in a double-walled technique they brought with them, and by the 1850s a whole neighborhood had risen: houses, a church, a school, all of sparkling stone.
Vermont has nothing else quite like it. The rest of Chester is the classic version of the state, a long village green with porches facing it and a general store that has served as the town's living room for generations.
On the shirt
Our Chester design honors the stone: a gabled stone house rendered slab by slab, flecked to catch the mica glint, the green stretched out before it. It is a shirt about craft, which feels right for a town built by hand twice over.
