Ask around Waitsfield and you will hear a few theories about how the Mad River got its name. The river settles the argument every spring. It gives its name to the whole valley, and Waitsfield sits at the heart of it, farm fields running up to the ridgelines on either side.

The covered bridge in the village has carried traffic over the water since 1833, which makes it the oldest operating covered bridge in Vermont, and just south of town a twelve-sided round barn from 1910 still stands, one of the state's shrinking handful. Skiers know the valley for its slopes; farmers knew it first for its soil.

Our Waitsfield design puts the name front and center: the river tumbling wild beneath the old bridge, the round barn on its rise, and the word Mad doing exactly the work it has always done.
