The Battenkill slides past Manchester full of wild trout that are famously hard to catch, which is exactly how the town likes them. Anglers have been coming here since the mid-1800s, when a local rod builder set up shop and began outfitting sportsmen for the river; the village has been a capital of American fly fishing ever since, and the sport's national museum now keeps its treasures in town. Underfoot, Manchester is literal marble: the village laid its first marble sidewalk in 1850, cut from quarries in the surrounding mountains, and by 1890 there were four miles of it. Over everything rises Equinox, the big-shouldered mountain that gives the village its backdrop in every season. Our Manchester design ties the story together: a trout rising to a dry fly, Equinox looming behind, and a band of marble white running beneath like a sidewalk you could stroll forever. Local Manchester shops will show up on this page as they come aboard ShirtMap.
