Right in the middle of downtown Middlebury, Otter Creek drops eighteen feet over a rock shelf, and the sound of it follows you everywhere. The village grew up around the falls, whose water once powered a cluster of nineteenth-century mills; one of them, four stories of locally quarried stone, still stands at the water's edge.

Otter Creek is Vermont's longest river, and it saves its best trick for this exact spot. Up the hill, a college has kept the town young for more than two centuries, its stone buildings looking down on the steeples and storefronts below.
