For longer than anyone could remember, a face kept watch over Franconia. The Old Man of the Mountain, five granite ledges high on a cliff in the notch that resolved into a stern profile from just the right spot, was New Hampshire's emblem, stamped on road signs, license plates, and the state quarter. Then, on the night of May 3, 2003, the ledges let go, and the state has been quietly heartbroken ever since. Franconia keeps other distinguished company too: Robert Frost farmed on a ridge outside the village from 1915 to 1920 and wrote some of his best mountain poems looking at these peaks. Our Franconia design does what the granite no longer can: it holds the profile, rendered clean against the ridgeline of the notch, trees below, memory intact.
