Meredith runs downhill to the water, and it always has. Two centuries ago villagers channeled a canal from the smaller lake above town, ran it under Main Street, and let it fall forty feet toward Winnipesaukee, powering a string of mills; the last of them, a linen mill, kept weaving into the 1980s. Now the falls pour past shops instead of looms, and the docks at the foot of town serve as the front porch of the Lakes Region. What everyone remembers about Meredith, though, is the shape of the big lake itself, that sprawling inkblot of bays, necks, and islands. Our Meredith design is a map lover's shirt: the full outline of Winnipesaukee in crisp linework, a small star on Meredith Bay to mark home, and a loon floating in the open water like it holds the deed.
