Every arrival in Jackson happens the same way: through the red covered bridge. Built in 1876 and nicknamed the Honeymoon Bridge, it carries you over the Ellis River and into a village that seems arranged purely for the pleasure of it, inns and greens ringed by mountains on every side. In winter Jackson becomes one of the great cross-country skiing villages in the East, with well over a hundred kilometers of trails threading out from the center through forest and old farmland. In fall, the foliage along the river is the kind people cross oceans to photograph.
