The slogan on Wolfeboro's signs reads the oldest summer resort in America, and the history mostly holds up: a few years before the Revolution, New Hampshire's last royal governor built himself a grand summer estate on the lake east of the village, making this arguably the first place on the continent anyone traveled to purely for a summer. Two and a half centuries later the habit shows no sign of wearing off.

The town docks on Winnipesaukee still fill with boats, ice cream still gets walked along the bay, and half the local stories still start with the words back at camp.
