Three small lighthouses ride the waters of Lake Sunapee, which is three more than most lakes can claim. They date to the steamboat decades, roughly the 1880s through the 1930s, when passenger boats needed warning off the shoals, and all three are still standing, lately lifted onto new foundations by neighbors who refused to let them tip into the lake. That tells you most of what you need to know about Sunapee: a harbor village that takes care of its things. Summer here is boats and music at the harbor; winter belongs to the ski mountain rising just beyond the water.
