Everyone has heard of Lake George. Bolton Landing is where you go once you have. Up the western shore from the busy end of the lake, the village faces the Narrows, where the water pinches between mountains and scatters into dozens of forested islands you can reach only by boat. Founded in 1799 as a landing for logging boats, Bolton later drew Gilded Age millionaires who built grand summer places along the shore, and a world-famous opera singer who built her lakeside teaching studio here in the 1920s, still standing among the pines. Mostly, though, Bolton Landing is about mornings on the water: a small boat, a picnic, an island campsite, the mountains doubling themselves on the surface.
