Cooperstown was a famous village before anyone here threw a pitch. William Cooper founded it in 1786, and his son James Fenimore Cooper grew up on these shores and set his frontier novels here, giving Otsego Lake the name locals still use: Glimmerglass. Then came the story that a Civil War general invented baseball in a Cooperstown pasture, a tale historians long ago filed under myth, and it hardly matters, because the village embraced the game completely anyway. Every summer, Main Street fills with families on a baseball pilgrimage, kids arriving glove in hand, whole teams in matching jerseys spilling out of the shops. The lake still glimmers at the foot of the village, exactly as the novelist promised.
