The train from the city lets you off practically on Main Street, and Main Street runs straight downhill to the Hudson, ending at a little riverfront bandstand with one of the best views in the valley: the river narrowing through the Highlands, mountains shouldering in on both sides. Many weekend arrivals are here for the mountain just north of the village. Breakneck Ridge is a scramble more than a hike, hands-on-rock steep almost immediately, and its ledges above the Hudson have made it one of the most popular day hikes anywhere near New York. The reward for coming back down is Cold Spring itself, a trim 19th century village of antique shops and cafes that has been catching river travelers since the days when its foundry cast cannons for the Union army.
