On winter Fridays, half of Buffalo seems to point itself south toward Ellicottville, where ski slopes rise directly above a brick Victorian village. That proximity is the whole magic. You ski all day, then walk, actually walk, to dinner on a Main Street of 19th century storefronts strung with lights. Skiing took root here in the 1930s, when locals rigged a rope tow on a nearby hill and started holding races, and the town has been Western New York's winter capital ever since. It refuses to hibernate in the off season, too: come mid-October, the village throws a fall festival that packs the streets with vendors and leaf-peepers while chairlifts run for the foliage.
