Ask someone from Clayton what they are and there is a decent chance the answer is a river rat. It is not an insult. Along this stretch of the St. Lawrence, the name is worn with real pride by people who grew up on the water, who can read the current, find the fish, and handle a boat before they can legally drive. Clayton honors the boats themselves, too: the town keeps one of the finest collections of antique wooden boats anywhere, gleaming mahogany runabouts and skiffs from the era when this shore built them, and every summer the classics gather in the harbor again. Beyond the docks the river is scattered with islands, some barely big enough for a cabin and a flagpole.
