Rhinebeck runs on two clocks. One is set to 1766, when an inn opened at the village crossroads that has been putting up travelers ever since and is often called the oldest continuously operating inn in America. Washington slept there. So, probably, will somebody this weekend. The other clock is set to about 1917: on summer and fall weekends, a grass airstrip outside the village flies its collection of antique and replica airplanes, fabric-winged machines from aviation's first decades, in airshows complete with mock dogfights overhead. Between those two eras, Rhinebeck accumulated some of the prettiest blocks in the Hudson Valley, all white porches, bookshops, and farmers market mornings. It is a village where the past is not preserved so much as kept running, oiled and airworthy.
