Saranac Lake earned its reputation the hard way. Beginning in the 1880s, tuberculosis patients came from around the world for the fresh-air cure, resting through Adirondack winters on glassed-in porches, and hundreds of those cure cottages still line the village streets. A town that spent decades convincing people winter air was medicine naturally learned to celebrate the season, and since 1897 it has thrown the oldest winter carnival in the eastern United States. Every February, volunteers cut blocks of ice from the lake at the edge of downtown and stack them into a glowing palace on the shore, a ritual the whole village turns out for. Around it all runs the chain of lakes and rivers that gives the town its name and its summer life.
