The lake beside Hawley is younger than some of the houses in town. In 1926 a power company finished its dam and the valley slowly filled, becoming Lake Wallenpaupack: mile after mile of shoreline, coves, and islands where farms had been. Hawley, an old mill town on the Lackawaxen, found itself with a waterfront, and it has been the lake's town ever since. Summer means boathouses and docks, sails scattered across the broad water, ice cream eaten standing up. Winter brings something better than quiet: bald eagles come down from the north when their own rivers freeze, gathering where the moving water stays open, and on a cold January morning you can stand on the bank and watch them fish.
