The gas lamps come on at dusk in Wellsboro, and they are not electric reproductions: they burn gas, as they have for generations, down a wide, tree-lined Main Street of brick storefronts that looks almost too intact to be accidental. Ten miles west, the land drops away into Pine Creek Gorge, nearly a thousand feet deep and close to fifty miles long, known to nearly everyone as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. So the town holds two kinds of light: warm lamplight on the sidewalks, and the long views from the canyon rim, where hawks ride the air below your feet. Wellsboro has been the canyon's front porch for more than a century and wears the job lightly, a small town politely underselling an enormous hole in the earth.
