One morning a year, before sunrise on February 2, thousands of people stand in the cold on a wooded hill outside Punxsutawney called Gobbler's Knob, waiting on a groundhog. The tradition dates to 1887, when locals first made the trek, and it has grown from a small excursion into the town's whole identity, cheerfully embraced. The animal is consulted at dawn: a shadow means six more weeks of winter, no shadow means an early spring, and the crowd cheers either way, because accuracy was never really the point. The point is that a small town in the western Pennsylvania hills convinced an entire country to look its way once a year using nothing but a rodent and a straight face. The rest of the year, Punxsutawney is a friendly hill town with groundhog statues scattered around like punctuation. Our Punxsutawney design catches the moment before the verdict: a groundhog silhouetted against a huge February sunrise, its shadow stretching long across the snow.
