On the eighth of August, 1829, a steam locomotive built in England rolled onto wooden tracks at Honesdale carrying exactly one person, the engineer, because nobody else would chance it. It ran about three miles and came back without exploding, and with that, the first commercial locomotive run in America was complete. The engine proved too heavy for the track and never hauled a single load of coal, which is somehow a very Pennsylvania ending, but the run stuck: Honesdale calls itself the birthplace of the American railroad, and it has the date to back it up. The town itself was a canal company's creation, the inland port where coal came down from the mountains by gravity railroad and left for the cities by water. Our Honesdale design puts that brave little engine in motion, smoke trailing, wheels churning above the year 1829, with the hills of Wayne County rolled out behind it. Honesdale businesses roll onto this page as they join ShirtMap.
