There is a waterfall in the middle of Ohiopyle, a broad ledge where the Youghiogheny River drops all at once, and the town is small enough that the falls may be its largest single feature. On summer weekends this borough of a few streets, tucked inside a vast state park, absorbs crowds many times its size: rafters queuing for the rapids downstream, where the river runs miles of dependable whitewater, and cyclists rolling through on the Great Allegheny Passage, the rail-trail stretching about a hundred and fifty miles from Pittsburgh to Cumberland on its way toward Washington. Everyone is wet, sunburned, or happily exhausted, and the town feeds them ice cream and sends them back out. That is essentially the whole economy, and nobody is complaining.
