About Ligonier
The square at the center of Ligonier is called the Diamond, and the bandstand in the middle of it is the kind of landmark people arrange to meet at without specifying further. Around it sit shops, flags, and the unhurried traffic of the Laurel Highlands.
The deeper story stands a few blocks away, where a reconstructed fort recalls 1758 and the French and Indian War, when a British army thousands strong camped here on Loyalhanna Creek during its push west toward the forks of the Ohio. The fort withstood an attack that October and held the line; for a moment, this valley was one of the most consequential places on the continent. Now it is one of the most pleasant, which feels like a fair trade.
