About Brewster
Twice a day, the bay walks away from Brewster. At dead low the water can retreat close to two miles, uncovering a rippled sand floor where people wander among tide pools carrying buckets, and the horizon becomes a place you can stroll toward. These are among the widest tidal flats in North America, and walking them is the town's defining activity, part beachcombing, part pilgrimage.
Back on shore, the old King's Highway is lined with the handsome houses of nineteenth-century shipmasters. For a small bayside town, Brewster produced a startling number of sea captains, and their homes still set the tone: dignified, trim, facing the road as if expecting company.
