More than fifty sea captains' houses stand along one stretch of the old King's Highway in Yarmouth Port, each marked with a small black-and-gold schooner plaque, and locals call the run the Captains' Mile. Walk it and the 1800s come back into focus: these were men who crossed oceans for a living, then came home to build square, confident houses a short walk from the bay. At the other end of town's north side, a quarter-mile boardwalk runs out over creek and salt marsh at the bayside beach, ending where the sunset draws a faithful nightly audience. In between, Yarmouth goes about its business, less flashy than its neighbors and perfectly content about it.
