Marblehead spent its first century and a half as a fishing town, and the crooked lanes above the harbor still bend the way footpaths bent in the 1600s. Then came September 1775, when a schooner owned, captained, and crewed by Marblehead men became the first vessel George Washington ordered to sea against British supply ships. On that basis the town calls itself the birthplace of the American Navy. Other places claim the title too, a neighboring city and a lake town in upstate New York among them, and the argument has been running cheerfully for two centuries now. What is beyond dispute is what the harbor looks like on a summer Saturday: a forest of masts, hundreds of hulls swinging on moorings, sails crowding the channel past the lighthouse on the neck. Our Marblehead design leans into that certainty. Sailboats heel across the chest in a tight racing fleet, the harbor drawn as a ribbon beneath them, with a quiet nod to 1775 worked into the lettering. Marblehead businesses show up on this page as they come aboard ShirtMap.
