Falmouth measures its summer in seven miles. Since 1973, a famous road race has poured out of Woods Hole on an August Sunday and followed the shore into town, a course that began as a run between two barrooms and grew into one of the country's great races. It passes below Nobska Light, the white lighthouse on its headland above the ferry port village, where a beacon has marked the entrance to the sound since the 1820s. The rest of the year that same shoreline belongs to the bike path, a paved ribbon laid on an old rail bed, rolling past marshes and beaches to the docks where the boats load for the island run.
