About Great Barrington
The Housatonic makes a slow, patient turn through Great Barrington, and the town has always worked along its banks: mills once, then the railroad, whose brick-block bones still line the downtown blocks. W. E. B. Du Bois was born here in 1868 and spent his boyhood along this river, a fact the town marks with quiet pride at his family homesite and in a riverside garden downtown.
Great Barrington today is the busy one among the southern Berkshire towns, the place with the crowded main street, the good coffee, and, a few minutes east, a small ski hill where half the county learned to snowplow. It is a town that manages to be both the errand stop and the destination.
On the shirt
Our Great Barrington design braids those threads together: the river running through the composition, the little ski hill rising behind town, a hint of rail iron underfoot. It reads like the town feels, layered and unpretentious and older than it acts.
