On the highest hill in Dennis stands a stout cobblestone tower, thirty feet of stone with a spiral of steps inside and a view that repays the climb. It is the third tower to hold that ground: the first, built of wood in 1874, blew down in a gale, the second burned, and the 1901 stone version has simply declined to leave.

Below it lies a deep kettle lake, and on a clear day the parapet shows you the whole sweep of the bay, all the way to the tip of the Cape. Down in the village, a summer playhouse has been raising its curtain since 1927, the oldest professional summer theater in the country, its stage housed in a meetinghouse built in 1838 and moved to the spot. Dennis has been in the view and entertainment business a long time, in other words, and is good at both.
