Subtraction made Truro. The outer Cape narrows here into moors, hollows, and high clay bluffs, with fewer houses, fewer streetlights, and more open sky than anywhere else on the peninsula. On the highest of those bluffs stands Highland Light, the Cape's first lighthouse, established in 1797. The sea that justified it nearly claimed it: erosion brought the cliff edge within about a hundred feet, so in 1996 the whole tower was jacked up and moved 450 feet back, and it still throws its beam over the Atlantic. Out in the dunes, a scattering of bare-bones shacks has sheltered writers and painters for generations, no plumbing, no power, all view. And improbably, grapevines: rows of them ripening on the hills, because Truro does what it wants. Our Truro design puts Highland Light on its bluff with the sheared cliff face below and a wide, empty sky doing most of the work, which is accurate.
