Sandwich was here first. Settled in 1637 and incorporated two years later, it is the oldest town on Cape Cod, and for the record it predates the lunch by more than a century, so the town owes that joke nothing. For much of the 1800s, Sandwich was famous across America for its pressed glass, and the glassmaking era still colors the town's identity the way sea captains define other towns. The landmark everyone remembers, though, is plainer. A wooden boardwalk, first built in 1875, striding on thin legs across the creek and salt marsh to the beach. Generations of kids have jumped from its rails into the creek at high tide, a tradition roughly as durable as the glass.
