When the trolley line through Shelburne Falls shut down in the late 1920s, the village was left holding a 400-foot concrete bridge over the Deerfield River with no trolleys to carry. The local women's club bought it in 1929 and planted it, and volunteers have kept it in bloom every season since, hundreds of varieties of flowers crossing the river on five arches. Two blocks downstream, the river shows off its own landscaping: dozens of glacial potholes ground into the bedrock over thousands of years, smooth stone bowls that look carved on purpose. A village that turned its dead infrastructure into a garden and treats its riverbed as a gallery has a clear sense of itself. Our Shelburne Falls design puts the flowering bridge mid-river, arches reflected in the water, with the swirled forms of the potholes worked into the foreground rock. It is engineering and geology sharing one small stretch of the Deerfield, which is the whole village in miniature. Shelburne Falls businesses will bloom on this page too, as they join ShirtMap.

The ShirtMap Shelburne Falls shirt is currently being designed. When it is ready, it will be sold right on this page.
