In December of 1620, on Eastham's bay shore, an exploring party from the Mayflower and men of the Nauset met for the first time, arrows answered by musket fire, no lives lost on either side. The beach where it happened is still called First Encounter, and Eastham keeps the name as plain history: the first meeting of two worlds on this shore, told straight. The town's other elder is the windmill on the green. Built in 1680, it stood in two other towns before Eastham claimed it for good, and it remains the oldest windmill on Cape Cod, still capable of grinding corn. Past both lies the reason most travelers slow down here: Eastham is the gateway to the protected outer beach, where the ponds and pitch pines give way to dunes and the open Atlantic takes over.
